This is a full day course focusing on the multi-use Birch tree. The course is run from the edge of the picturesque bluebell woodland at East Bysshe Cross Country Course and includes wild food, fire making, water sourcing, fungi and craft.
We start the day off with a foraging walk into birch woodland led by one of our friendly experienced instructors to learn about the tree and it's habitat. You will be given a demonstration on how to tap the tree for it's sap with minimal impact on the trees health before having an opportunity to each set your own tap. We will then return to base camp for a birch sap based woodsman's brew.
The second part of the morning covers making fire with natural materials associated with the birch tree. In this session we will discuss, demonstrate and then give you the opportunity to make fire with some of the very best bushcraft material and methods available in the northern hemisphere.
We will then provide you with a tasty foraged lunch cooked on the base camp fire. There will also be hot and cold foraged refreshments available throughout the day to keep you nicely hydrated.
After lunch we will turn our attention to the wonderful world of fungi. The birch tree plays host to a great many fungi and some of these are iconic in the bushcraft world. After a short discussion we will leave base camp to look for some of the ones you can expect to find at this time of year, show you how to identify them and demonstrate how best to use them.
In the second afternoon session we be looking at birch related craft. The birch provides us with some of the best materials for creating a multitude of craft items from a basic spoon right up to the iconic birch bark canoe. We will show you how to make a simple birch bark craft item that is a useful piece of bushcraft kit and in the process introduce you further to this dependable and adaptable natural resource.
