Fishing, Foraging and Fire: Lake

Fishing is very much a part of bushcraft and is an especially reliable method of sourcing animal protein when in the field to accompany your foraged diet. Fly fishing lends itself to bushcraft very well as the kit is so minimal. At the same time it is supremely adaptable to both species behaviour and habitat that it greatly out competes the much cruder ‘hobo’ style fishing techniques.

This is a course designed for the novice fly fisher, forager or those that are new to both.

The day will start with a lesson on casting a fly line, working a fly and playing a fish. There will then be approximately 2-3hrs to catch yourself a trout or two while our instructors offer advice and support.

We will then stop for a foraged themed two course lunch and refreshments to enjoy around the basecamp fire.

After lunch, we will go on a foraging walk to find some herbs, vegetables and materials suitable for cooking your catch on a campfire. On our return there will be a fire with natural tinders lesson and a ponassing demonstration (the native American Indian method of filleting and cooking fish). The trout will then be cooked along with the items we have foraged to enjoy together around the fire and finish the day.

N.B. Coltsford Mill is a stocked trout fishery we are utilising to teach the novice angler and forager the basic skills to enable the exploration of wilder places. We will be running more advanced remote fishing and foraging courses in the near future. If you would like to be notified of new courses please sign up to our newsletter via the form in the website footer.

Booking price includes 2 fish to take home (if caught). If you wish to take more fish then it is possible to pay a bit extra to the fishery on the day.
