Spend the day learning to make your own spoons and spatulas - essential items for your bushcraft cooking. For example, with a lot of cooking with fire it can be a necessity to create your own utensils with long handles to avoid getting burnt is just one example.
You will get to harvest your own small scale timber, learning which species, growth habits and locations make for the most successful and sustainable activity before using your freshly harvested materials to craft your cooking utensils.
The day is split into four sessions with two 30 minute brew breaks and 1 hour for lunch.
- Tree ID and harvesting - Your day will start with a walk looking for suitable species and growth to harvest small scale timber for green wood carving. You will learn which species are best suited for spoon carving and how to harvest them sustainably. As well as environmental concerns you'll learn which woods are toxic and to definitely avoid.
- Spatula making - In this session you will learn how to use a knife and saw to fashion your freshly harvested chestnut into a spatula. This introduces you to the first steps of spoon making and when you're finished you can use your spatula to cook the first course of your lunch!
- Spoon carving - After lunch begins the spoon making proper. You will have already learned the first steps to rough a blank in session 2 and now you will learn to safely use various knife carving techniques to safely whittle away with more accuracy.
- Spoon carving & finishing - Once you are satisfied with the shape of the spoon you will then get to use a spoon knife (knife with a curved blade) to create the bowl of the spoon. At this point you will have your rough spoon which would be usable straight away... but you will be shown some better finishing techniques to apply to use the spoon long term and to end up with a much better looking spoon too!

All of our one day ForagedTM courses include a 3 course lunch showcasing wild foods.
When booking onto one of these courses make sure you inform us of any dietary requirements, food allergies, pregnancy etc. during the checkout process.
Hot water for drinks will be provided by way of a brewfire kettle. Foraged teas and cordials will also be provided.
What we do not provide is any caffeine, sugar or dairy but you are more than welcome to bring your own if you need to.
