Tunbridge Wells Common

A foraging walk exploring the many wild species of plants, trees and fungi to be found in the many and varied habitats of Tunbridge Wells Common.

It is especially fitting to explore this area through the practice of foraging as Mesolithic hunter gatherers have congregated here since around 4500 bc. They were drawn to the overhangs of the many sandstone outcrops in the area as these made for convenient shelter and would have been prominent landmarks in the great Wealden forest. It may well have been these people who encouraged the development of the heathland in the vicinity of the rocks to attract grazing deer. There have even been flint artifacts from the Mesolithic period found near the rocks at Happy Valley and Denny Bottom on the nearby Rusthall Common.

The commons habitat includes; ponds, grassland, heathland and woodland with pasture, glades & rides and as such provides a great deal of diversity throughout the year.
